What is Image Annotation?
Image annotation is just a fancy term for labeling image for the purpose of providing additional information about it. Annotated images can be used to train an AI to recognize parts of an image so that it could identify similar objects in other pictures that have not yet been annotated.
What can you do with Image Annotation?
Let’s take a look at these examples below, they will help you better understand how image annotation can be used to harness the power of AI.
- Image Annotation as a Medical Tool for Skin Cancer Detection
Skin cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the United States. It is also very expensive to treat and manage. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates that there will be more than 3 million cases of skin cancer in the US by 2020, which translates to over 10,000 deaths.
This is why researchers are looking forward to finding a way to detect skin cancer earlier than now. Traditionally, detecting skin cancer has been done by examining the area of the skin for visual signs like moles or patches of discoloration. However, this method is not very sensitive. It only detects suspicious moles flesh-colored spots on darker-skinned people who have been exposed to UV rays from the sun.
In this project, a team from the University of Washington used AI to detect skin cancer. They conducted a study on 10 patients who had skin cancer. They used this data to train an AI that could predict the presence of skin cancer based on its appearance. They then tested this program against 15,000 patients with no signs of skin cancer at all. It was able to detect the presence of skin cancer 79% of the time!
- Image Annotation as a Research Tool
There are many ways that AI can be used to enhance your research. This is true for both computer vision and natural language processing (NLP). Usually, people use AI to annotate images or transcribe speech. You can use these images or transcribed speech to conduct research on specific topics.
For example, you could search for photos of your favorite sports team online. Then you can have an AI program label the parts of the picture so that you can do more research on it later. Or you could transcribe an audio file into text using an AI program like IBM Watson Speech-to-Text or Google Cloud Speech API. Then you could use this text transcript to conduct a search on the internet.
